Book an AppointmentWhat is TMJ Ankylosis?
The temporomandibular joint connects the lower jaw to the skull. In ankylosis, the joint becomes fused by bone or fibrous tissue, which progressively limits how far the jaw can open.
It can follow trauma or infection, and in children it may also affect how the jaw grows. Eating, speaking and oral hygiene all become harder as movement reduces.
TMJ Ankylosis: What Treatment Aims To Do
- Improve how far the mouth can open
- Reduce pain and discomfort
- Make chewing and speaking easier
- Support facial growth in younger patients
Our Treatment Process
Evaluation
Clinical assessment together with CT or MRI imaging of the joint.
Surgery
The fused tissue is released to free the joint.
Jaw Mobilisation
Early, guided movement helps prevent the joint fusing again.
Physiotherapy
Ongoing exercises and follow-up support long-term movement.
Surgical Techniques We Use
The technique is chosen based on how the joint has fused and, in children, on the need to protect ongoing jaw growth.
Gap Arthroplasty
A section of fused bone is removed to create a gap where the joint used to move, allowing the jaw to open again.
Interpositional Arthroplasty
A gap is created and a tissue graft placed between the bone ends, helping to prevent the joint fusing a second time.
Costochondral Graft Reconstruction
For growing patients, a rib cartilage graft can reconstruct the joint while supporting the jaw's continued growth.
Physiotherapy & Jaw Mobilisation
Structured exercises after surgery keep the joint moving and protect the surgical result.
Don't let jaw stiffness limit your life.
